Pediatric Eye Care

Pediatric Eye Care in Albuquerque

At Albuquerque Vision Care and Advanced Eyewear, we understand early eye care is important for children. A child’s eye is still developing, and as with any development, problems can arise even this early in life just as it can later in life. Statistics report that about 10% of preschool and 25% of school-age children suffer from vision problems. Visual issues can interfere with a child’s learning and development. Early diagnosis and treatment of ocular diseases help prevent loss of vision, and stops eye conditions from becoming a problem in the future.

Pediatric Eye Exams

It is recommended to get your child’s eyes checked as early as 6 months and then again at ages 3 and 4. After that, you can step into the routine of eye checkups every 2 years. That way, any eye issues can be detected and treated by the time your child is ready for school. The following are common childhood eye problems our eye doctor will look for during your child’s eye exam:

  • Misaligned eyes
  • Astigmatism
  • Ptosis (droopy eyelid)
  • Lazy eye
  • Nearsightedness
  • Farsightedness
  • Color blindness

Our eye doctor will also check for signs of ocular diseases, including:

  • Pediatric cataract or glaucoma
  • Retinoblastoma (eye tumor)
  • Chalazion
  • Conjunctivitis
  • Dermoid cysts
  • Tear duct obstruction
  • Retinitis pigmentosa

If your child has an eye or vision problem, there are corrective lenses that can improve his or her condition, such as eyeglasses and contact lenses.
