Laser Surgery

You may have heard about Lasik eye surgery and wondered what it is. This popular surgery changes the shape of the eye to update vision as a long-term treatment.

However, if you want Lasik surgery, you must determine whether you are a good candidate. See our optometrist for a screening at Albuquerque Vision Care and Advanced Eyewear in Albuquerque, NM.

How Is Lasik Performed?

After you have been deemed a good candidate, an appointment will be made for surgery with a surgeon. You are generally expected to take a sedative just before the surgery, so you are relaxed and calm during the procedure. The surgeon will then assess the health of your eyes and take measurements of them.

Once the sedative has worked and you feel relaxed, the surgeon will put eye drops into your eyes that will numb them. Then, the surgeon uses a laser to change the curve of your cornea. Usually, this is done by making a flap in the eye, raising it, and then reshaping the cornea. Each laser pulse will erase a small part of the cornea. This pulse allows the doctor to make the curvature flatter or steeper, depending on what you need to correct your vision. Sometimes, a skinny flap is made, and sometimes, no flap is used.

Is It Safe to Get Lasik?

Every surgery has risks, but Lasik has a long track record of safe usage. It's been done for decades and is highly effective in many patients who no longer want to wear corrective lenses to see clearly.
