Macular Degeneration

If you think you might have macular degeneration, there are several symptoms that you can watch out for. The severity of the symptoms often depends on how far the condition has progressed. If you have signs of macular degeneration, call us in Albuquerque, NM, to schedule a screening with our optometrist.

What Is Macular Degeneration?

This condition is present when the middle part of the retina begins to deteriorate. The retina is located at the back part of the inside of the eye. When this deteriorates, it impairs vision. This condition can lead to serious vision problems. Some treatments can help some patients with this condition, but there is no cure for it. It's more common in women and in those who are 60 or over. With treatments, you can manage the condition.

Common Signs of Macular Degeneration

Often, some of the first signs of the condition are a vision that is slightly blurry and the need for more light. Many patients find that it's harder to read or that they are unable to recognize faces. Sometimes, straight lines will look like they're bent or wavy. A highly common sign is that the central vision has a blurry area while the side vision is fine. Things may start to look smaller than they are, and colors may start to look paler. You may have a dark area in the center of your vision. You may also see lots of floaters or spots in your field of vision. Colors may be hard to distinguish, and you may have worse vision when glare is present. If you have a hard time judging distances, this can be another sign.
