Early Signs of Glaucoma

Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of vision loss in the US. Approximately 3 million Americans are battling glaucoma, and many more don’t even realize they have glaucoma. That’s why at Albuquerque Vision Care and Advanced Eyewear, we advise that the best way to stay ahead of glaucoma is by maintaining regular eye exams. This way, glaucoma can be detected and managed in its early stages before it compromises your vision.

What Is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a group of diseases that causes damage to the optic nerve. The optic nerve relays visual information from the retina to the brain. Damage to the optic nerve occurs when there is unusual pressure buildup in the eye triggered by factors such as injury, high blood pressure, medications, or poor fluid drainage in your eye.

Early Signs of Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a silent thief of vision. This is because its symptoms only manifest when the disease is at an advanced stage. However, there are certain symptoms of glaucoma in its early stages that you can look out for. They include:

  • Seeing halos around light sources: If you see big, bright circles around light sources, it means you have a serious eye condition, such as glaucoma or cataracts.
  • Cloudy-looking eyes: Due to pressure buildup in your eye, your cornea may look cloudy and watery. Cloudy eyes are easily visible in the mirror, so seek immediate treatment when you spot this symptom.
  • Light sensitivity: There are many reasons why you could be sensitive to light. However, sensitivity to light is a common symptom of glaucoma.
  • Sudden eye pain: Pressure buildup in the eye could cause sudden, severe eye pain accompanied by nausea, headaches, and vomiting.
  • Loss of vision in one eye: If you notice signs of vision loss in one eye, it’s essential to be tested for glaucoma right away. Seek immediate treatment from our eye doctors to avoid complete vision loss.
